Is My Child Grinding Their Teeth?
While many children are unaware of their nocturnal habits, parents often notice the physical and audible signs during sleep or morning routines. Occasional grinding is typically harmless, but chronic bruxism can lead to premature enamel wear and jaw misalignment. Use this checklist to monitor your child:
- Audible Nocturnal Grinding: Frequent or repetitive sounds of teeth clenching, gnashing, or "clicking" while your child is asleep.
- Morning Tension & Headaches: Complaints of facial pain, referred earaches, or dull tension headaches at the temples immediately upon waking.
- Oromotor Fatigue: Tight or fatigued jaw muscles, or the sensation that the jaw cannot open or close comfortably (a "locked" feeling).
- Thermal Sensitivity: Increased tooth sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, often caused by the thinning of protective enamel.
- Clinical Damage: Visible evidence of flattening, chipping, or fracturing on the tips of the primary or permanent teeth.
- Soft Tissue Irritation: Indentations or tissue damage discovered on the inner cheek or tongue during routine cleaning.
- TMJ Dysfunction: A persistent clicking or popping sound when the jaw is opened, which may indicate stress on the temporomandibular joint.
Risk Factors for Bruxism
There is no specific known cause for bruxism, and for many, it disappears in adolescence. However, children are more at risk for the disorder if they:
- Have abnormalities of the jaw or misaligned teeth: Structural issues like malocclusion often cause the upper and lower arches to struggle for a comfortable resting position.
- Are experiencing stress or anxiety: Emotional tension, school-related anxiety, or social stress can manifest as involuntary physical clenching.
- Have other sleep disorders: A higher prevalence of bruxism is seen in children who snore or suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.
Lifestyle Factors: High caffeine intake or exposure to second-hand smoke can stimulate the nervous system and increase jaw activity during sleep.
Treatment & Prevention: Why Quality Matters
In many cases, bruxism in children resolves on its own over time. However, when intervention is necessary to protect a changing smile, understanding the options is key.
(Note: Our doctors generally do not recommend a nightguard until all adult teeth have fully erupted, typically around age 13.)
| Feature | Custom Pediatric Mouth Guard | Store-Bought Generic Guard |
| Precision Fit | Molded specifically to your child’s unique dental arch for maximum comfort | Bulky, "one-size-fits-all" design that often slips or falls out |
| Breathability | Designed for minimal interference with nighttime breathing and sleep | Can restrict airflow and cause discomfort for the child |
| Durability | High-grade, medical materials designed to withstand heavy clenching | Thinner plastic that can be chewed through quickly |
| Growth Monitoring | Evaluated by a pediatric specialist to ensure no interference with jaw growth | May unintentionally shift or restrict erupting permanent teeth |

Our Gentle Treatment Approach
True to our "painless treatment" philosophy, we take a conservative and watchful approach to pediatric bruxism:
- Custom [Mouth Guards]: We provide comfortable, custom-fitted guards to prevent wear on enamel or crowns.
- Medical Management: In some cases, a muscle relaxant may be prescribed to relax the jaw muscles.
- Restoration: If damage has occurred, our doctors provide gentle Dental Fillings or Dental Bonding to restore the tooth.
