Pediatric Oral Hygiene: The Foundation of a Lifetime Smile

At Pedodontic Associates, we believe that the best dental treatment is the one that is never needed. Since 1977, our mission has been to empower Hawaii’s keiki with the tools and knowledge they need to prevent Cavities and gum disease before they start. While many people associate tooth loss with decay, periodontal (gum) disease is a leading cause of dental issues later in life.

Establishing a thorough daily regimen of brushing and flossing is the most effective way to protect your child’s health. From our offices in Aiea, Honolulu, and Maui, we provide "Gentle Guidance" to help your child turn oral hygiene into a fun, lifelong habit.

Why Is Oral Hygiene So Important for Kids?

Gum disease begins with bacterial plaque—a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on teeth. If not removed through daily cleaning, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus), which can only be removed by a professional. Tartar buildup gradually destroys the tissues and bone that support the teeth.

Benefits of Proper Oral Hygiene:

  • Prevents Decay: Removes the acids that cause Dental Fillings to be necessary.
  • Protects Gum Health: Prevents gingivitis (inflammation) and more serious periodontitis.
  • Freshens Breath: Eliminates the bacteria that cause halitosis.
  • Saves Money: Preventive care is significantly more affordable than restorative procedures like crowns or Tooth Extractions.

The Pediatric Guide to Brushing & Flossing

Proper technique is just as important as frequency. We teach our patients the following "painless" methods to ensure every surface is cleaned effectively.

Brushing Teeth Correctly

  1. The 45-Degree Angle: Use a soft-bristled brush and position it at a 45-degree angle to the gum line.
  2. Back-and-Forth Motion: Use small, gentle back-and-forth strokes that cover two to three teeth at a time along the edge where the teeth meet the gums.
  3. The Vertical Brush: For the inside of the front teeth, turn the brush vertically and use short up-and-down motions.
  4. The Chewing Surfaces: Move the brush back and forth over the molars with gentle pressure.
  5. Rinse: Always rinse well after brushing to remove loosened plaque and food particles.

Flossing Teeth Correctly : Flossing is the only way to remove plaque from the hard-to-reach surfaces between teeth.

  • The 18-Inch Rule: Use about 18 inches of floss, winding the ends around your fingers.
  • The "C" Shape: Gently slide the floss between teeth using a back-and-forth motion. Curve the floss into a "C" shape around the edge of the tooth and slide it slightly into the gum line.
  • Up and Down: Use a sliding up-and-down motion on both sides of every tooth.
  • Be Gentle: Avoid "snapping" the floss, as this can cut delicate gum tissue.

Our Gentle Treatment Approach

We understand that some children are sensitive to the sights and sounds of a dental office. Our "Painless Treatment" philosophy extends to our cleanings:

  • "Tell-Show-Do": We explain each tool (like the "spinning toothbrush") before we use it.
  • Sensitive Care: If your child has sensitive teeth, we may recommend medicated toothpaste or specific rinses to make their home care more comfortable.
  • Educational Focus: We don't just clean; we teach. We show children exactly where they are missing spots so they can improve their technique at home.
